Colon Cancer seems to be on the rise. According to the Henry Ford livewell websitewww.henryford.com New cases of colon cancer and rectal cancer are occurring at an increasing rate among young and middle-aged adults throughout the U.S. In 2020, there will be about 18,000 cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed in people under 50, or about 49 new cases per day, according to the Colon Cancer Coalition. These numbers are alarming and scary at the same time. Do you know that there are about 19 million Colonoscopies performed yearly. That is good because it is saving lives. Family History or Not- I can tell you from my own experience I started by journey of screenings over fifteen years ago. Colon Cancer does not run in my family but I needed to follow the guidelines for screenings as recommended. Stay of the Internet-For those of us that have to be screened due to age, family history or previous problems how many of you feel the anxiety level heighten when it is your time to go? Well I had both upper and lower endoscopy a few weeks ago (scheduled time) and let me tell YOU ALL... I was searching on the internet and saying to mysel "what if this...what if that" how many of you rely upon the internet to self diagnois your issue? Well that was me five to ten times a day doing all the inquiries, searches, blogs etc. I worked myself up into a complete MESS. Shopping and picking up the SU-PREP- Another ordeal of purchasing clear items and items that don't have dye in them. The doctors office gives you all the do's and don't so you can we fully cleaned out. Just be sure to follow the directions to the T so you won't have to agonize and repeat the test again it is NO FUN. The presciption laxative they give you is an aquired taste and a taste that I will never aquire becaue that Shit is NASTY!!! Just endure it and get it over with. Your behind will be raw but have your tucks, baby wipes and vaseline on hand so you can be kind to your behind. The Day of your procedure: So I had a late in the day procedure not by choice it was what was available and I was starving literally dry mouth, irritable you name it I was experiencing it. My procedure ended up being delayed because the doctor had an emergency patient prior to my scheduled time. Understanding these things can come up so pack your patience. When I finally went back I was running my mouth just taliking (this truly was to quell my own fears. Next thing I was out and when I woke up I was in recovery. Now what I don't understand how is it doctors try to talk to you when your all doped up? I could not remember half of what he said but what I remember is drinking a whole can of gingerale and eating a EIGHT mini packs of Graham Crackers. Man I went in on those crackers The Results- As we age we either have polyps or suspect polyps and those that are fortunate not to have any KUDOS to you! I was all good with mine but encouraged to eat more fiber. Your doctor will advise if you need to come back in 3, 5 or 10 years. Stay with it and don't deviate from the years given to you. Lastly, those that are trepadacious about getting a colonoscopy speak with your doctor for options. BUT, stay on top of it so you don't run into any roadblocks later in life. I understand the fear but I will leave you with these three things: 1. Release Anxiety by breathing 2. Trust in GOD and his perfect will 3. God's provision in the midst of anxiety *This is just my own experience. I am not a doctor just sharing my experience.

As we age we begin to lose muscle mass. Studies show with exercise older women can build up muscle strength. I know I needed to hear this and APPLY :). I am only speaking for myself that staying active and fit is paramount for me and I know these last few months have been crazy where I have not had a chance to lift as much but I have improvised with tools at had at home which frankly was not alot. Life is all about improvisions and Plan B's.
Prior to the Pandemic I would meet with my Trainer Carlos Hernandez monthly see the progress, set up new goals and of course he would challenge me on "Out of the Box" training exercises. I am grateful for "Kick your butt" sessions. So I say to you Keep your Strength Training game strong doesn't matter how much you lift just keep at it. Quote: Real Strength is not just a condition of one Muscle but of one's Tender Spirit. Do you remember growing up and your paents always said get your education and be somebody? Well, my Jamaican/Panamanian dad always gave me sage advice, Go to School get your education, Keep your nose clean and leave the boys alone. Isn't it funny how we now as adults remember those sage conversations and wise advise from our parents. Fast forward I had always believed that it is important to keep learning and growing. After college I continued to learn in different educational arenas. But about eight months ago a friend told myself and a few others about this awesome educational opportunity that was being offered through Bank Of America. I immediately looked into it and sealed the deal. In this program offered by E-Cornell (Cornell University) I immeresed myself for six months completely into this program not only because wanted to learn more about Women and Entrepreneurship but it was actually very informative, engaging and insightful. Today, I am the proud recipient of a certificate from E-Cornell. I am grateful beyond words for the Professors that created a pathway for women who are on the path or are interested in becoming an entrepreneur. In the end I say never stop learning because life never stops teaching. You are always on a continous path of GROWTH! You are never too old to go back to school. The Corona Virus has unpended our lives in such a way that we almost felt like we were being held against our will right? I can say it was certainly hard on me mentally, physically and emotionally. I had so many dark days of the unknown. I can recall in the beginning I started experiencing some sort of depression for REAL! I had to quickly do a reassessment of my life, goals and aspirations. After talking with some of my fitness collegues and found out how they were staying sane during these times. Many of them were maintaining hope others were furthering their education and some were just status quo. After deep thought and my mind wavering up and down I decided to take on another fitness certification. I enrolled in something completely out of my realm from Yoga. I signed up for a MashUp certification in HITT, Agility & Strength and Mind and Body. I was like WHOA!!! this is deep but it can be rewarding at the end of the day. The end of the day came about a week ago after countless demo's, back and forth. I finally received my certification. I feel pretty spry right about now. So, I say to you during unprecended times "Level UP" step out of your comfort zone and learn something new. So name you can call me Coach Adina. The Corona Virus has upended many of our lives. During that time we either had to make sweeping changes in our daily lives or make adjustments or even both. I know for me it was a huge halt to my constant running around but on the flip side, it provided me time to regroup, reassess, and build my skill set. There were times when dark days of deep depression set in because of the unknown and day to day but through Faith, Friends, and Family I kept pressing on. I find complete JOY and YES JOY in exercising now don't get me wrong there are days I am like HAIL NO but it is necessary. So how did I get here to this story? Pre-COVID I had an amazing interview with Washingtonian Magazine (Busy Bodies) and everything was all set to go. My trainer Carlos R. Hernandez and gal pal Nicole Willis had the pictures all setup and BAM!!!! COVID set in and everything shut down which meant story halt. That's okay because I am grateful that the writer decided to put this out to the universe that YES we can still exercise and find time for yourself. Shout out to my amazing son Burnett Crawford who keeps his mama on her fitness game and my amazing husband that supports all my fitness shenanigans and my Tribe (too many to name) that is in the game for the same reasons. FITNESS!!! Thanks, Washingtonian Magazine for the awesome write-up.
